Asking for a new username

You can't change your own username on the site. To get a new one, open a support ticket in the Username category on the GTAPoliceMods Discord and say which name you'd like. An admin gives it to you, and your old name keeps working.

Where your username comes from

When you first sign in, you get your Discord username. If that name is taken, reserved or on hold, you get it with a number on the end, such as name_2. Characters a username can't have are replaced with _.

After that, your username never changes by itself. Renaming yourself on Discord doesn't touch it, so links to your profile and @mentions of you keep working.

Username and display name are different things

• Your username is the @name in your profile's address and in mentions. Only an admin can give you a new one.
• Your display name is the name shown beside your posts and mods. You can change it yourself in Profile settings, or have it follow your Discord name.

If you only want a different name to show, change the display name.

How to ask

1. See your current names on Account settings, under Username.
2. Open a support ticket in the Username category on the GTAPoliceMods Discord.
3. Say which username you want. Have a second choice ready in case the first is taken.
4. An admin assigns the name and makes it your main one.

There's no set number of changes, but each one is done by a person, and each is recorded.

What happens to your old name

Your old name stays yours. It redirects to your profile, and @mentions of it still reach you. Nobody else can take it.

If you hold more than one name, you choose which is your main one in Profile settings. Your profile lives at the main name, and the others point to it.

Names you can't have

Some names are reserved, such as admin, moderator, staff, support and gtapolicemods. Nobody gets these at sign-up, and only admins can assign them.

A name that an admin has taken away from an account is held for 30 days before it can go to anyone at sign-up.
