Uninstalling mods cleanly

Remove one mod or all of them from GTA V, and get back to a clean game by verifying your files.

How you remove a mod depends on how it went in. Close the game before any of these.

Play unmodded for a while

To switch mods off without removing them, rename the mods folder to something like mods_off. The game then loads its original archives. Rename it back to turn them on again.

Scripts are separate from the mods folder. To stop those too, move dinput8.dll out of the game folder. Without the ASI loader, no ASI script or ScriptHookV mod loads.

Remove an add-on pack

  1. Open OpenIV and turn on edit mode.
  2. Open mods\update\update.rpf\common\data\dlclist.xml and delete the pack's line.
  3. Save.
  4. Delete the pack's folder from mods\update\x64\dlcpacks\.

Remove the line first. A line that names a pack that isn't there can crash the game while loading.

Remove a replace vehicle or texture

Put the original file back over the changed one. In OpenIV, find the original in the game's own archive, outside mods, at the same path. Drag it to your desktop, then drag it into the matching archive inside mods with edit mode on.

If you changed many files in one archive, it is quicker to delete that archive from mods and copy a fresh one from the game folder. You lose every other change in that archive too.

Remove an OIV package

OpenIV does not record what a package changed, so it can't undo one for you. Your options:

  • Use the mod's uninstaller. Some authors ship a second .oiv that puts the originals back. Run it through the Package Installer and choose the mods folder again.
  • Restore from your backup. Copy the archives you saved before installing back over the changed ones.
  • Reset the affected archives. Delete them from mods and copy fresh ones from the game folder.

Remove scripts and plugins

Delete the files the mod added. The readme usually lists them.

  • ASI scripts: the .asi and its .ini in the game folder.
  • .NET scripts: the files in scripts\.
  • LSPDFR plugins: the .dll and its settings in plugins\LSPDFR\.
  • ELS vehicles: the VCF in ELS\pack_default\ as well as the model.

Remove a FiveM resource

Delete its ensure line from server.cfg, restart the server, then delete the folder from resources. Check whether another resource listed it as a dependency first.

Start again from clean

  1. Delete the mods folder.
  2. Delete dinput8.dll, ScriptHookV.dll, OpenIV.asi and any other files you added to the game folder.
  3. Verify the game files, which downloads fresh copies of anything changed or missing:
    • Steam: right-click the game, Properties, Installed Files, Verify integrity of game files.
    • Rockstar Games Launcher: Settings, pick the game under My installed games, Verify integrity.
    • Epic Games: Library, the three dots on the game, Manage, Verify.

Verifying repairs the game's own files. It does not delete files you added, which is why step 2 comes first.
