A livery is the paint and markings on a vehicle. It is a texture stored in the vehicle's texture dictionary, a .ytd file. Installing one means putting the new image into that file under the right name.
What you download
A livery download is one of two things:
- A finished
.ytdfile, named after the vehicle. You replace the vehicle's existing.ytdwith it. - Loose images, usually
.pngor.dds. You import them into the vehicle's existing.ytd.
The readme says which vehicle model the livery was made for. A livery fits one model's template and will look scrambled on any other.
Find the vehicle's ytd
For a replace vehicle, search OpenIV for the file name, such as police.ytd, and use the copy inside your mods folder with the highest patchday number.
For an add-on, the file is inside the pack, on a path like:
mods\update\x64\dlcpacks\packname\dlc.rpf\x64\vehicles.rpf\
The path inside dlc.rpf differs from pack to pack. Look for the .rpf that holds the .yft model files.
Replace the whole ytd
- Close the game and open OpenIV.
- Turn on edit mode.
- Go to the folder that holds the vehicle's
.ytd. - Drag the new
.ytdinto the OpenIV window. It overwrites the old one.
Keep a copy of the old file first if you might want it back.
Import images into the ytd
- Turn on edit mode and double-click the vehicle's
.ytdto open it. - Find the livery textures. They are usually named after the vehicle with
_sign_1,_sign_2and so on, or_livery_1. - Select the one to replace and click Replace, then pick your image. To add a livery in a new slot, click Import.
- Click Save.
The texture name must match what the model expects. If the model has four livery slots named police_sign_1 to police_sign_4, an image imported as mylivery is never shown.
Livery slots
A model has a fixed number of livery slots, set by whoever made it. You can change what is in a slot, but you can't add a slot by adding a texture. In the game, switch between them with a trainer's livery option, or let LSPDFR or the server pick.
On FiveM
Vehicle textures are in the resource's stream folder:
resources\[cars]\policecar\stream\policecar.ytd
Replace that .ytd with the new one, or open it in OpenIV, import the images and save. OpenIV can open a loose .ytd from any folder. Then restart the resource or the server. Players may need to rejoin to get the new file.
Keep textures a sensible size. FiveM warns about oversized stream files, and a very large .ytd can fail to load on players' games, leaving the car untextured.
If the livery looks wrong
- White or blank body. The texture name doesn't match the slot. See A vehicle has no textures or spawns invisible.
- Markings in the wrong places. The livery was made for a different model, or a different version of it.
- Old livery still showing. You edited a copy the game doesn't load. Look for another copy in a higher patchday.
