The game crashes after a Rockstar update

Get GTA V running again after a game update breaks ScriptHookV, RAGE Plugin Hook or your mods folder.

Nothing is wrong with your install. When Rockstar updates GTA V, the tools that script mods depend on stop working until their authors release new versions. This happens with most updates, and the wait is usually days.

Why an update breaks mods

ScriptHookV is built for exact game versions. On start it checks the game's version, and if it doesn't know it, it shows an error and closes the game. That is deliberate: running against an unknown version would crash in worse ways.

RAGE Plugin Hook and LSPDFR are tied to the game version in the same way. So are some ASI mods and any modified gameconfig.xml.

Your mods folder is affected too. The update replaces the game's update.rpf, and the copy in mods is now from the previous version.

What to do

  1. Check for a new ScriptHookV on its official page. The page lists the game version it supports. If it matches yours, download it and replace ScriptHookV.dll and dinput8.dll in the game folder.
  2. Check for a new LSPDFR and RAGE Plugin Hook on lcpdfr.com if you use them.
  3. Refresh your mods folder. Copy the game's new update.rpf over mods\update\update.rpf and add your changes again. See My mods folder stopped working.
  4. Replace gameconfig.xml with one made for the new version, if you use a modified one.
  5. Update other scripts that name a game version in their description.

Only download ScriptHookV from its official page. Sites that offer an early or unofficial build for a new game version are a common source of malware.

Playing while you wait

If no update is out yet, you can still play the unmodded game.

  1. Move dinput8.dll and ScriptHookV.dll out of the game folder, to a folder on your desktop.
  2. Rename mods to mods_off.
  3. Start the game.

With the ASI loader gone, no script loads, so nothing checks the version. Put the files back and rename the folder once the tools have updated.

LSPDFR players: start the game through the normal launcher, not RAGEPluginHook.exe, until both it and LSPDFR support the new version.

Rolling back the game

Going back to the previous game version is not supported, by Rockstar or by us. Launchers offer no option for it, and the methods passed around rely on files from other people's installs. We can't help with a rolled-back game.

Stopping the next update

You can't refuse an update for long, but you can choose when it lands.

  • Don't start the launcher when you've set aside an evening to play and an update has just come out. Check the ScriptHookV page first.
  • On Steam, set the game to update only when you launch it, in its Properties under Updates.
  • Keep a note of your dlclist.xml lines and a copy of your settings files, so rebuilding takes minutes.

It still crashes with updated tools

Then the update broke a single mod, not the tools. Follow The game crashes on startup to find it. Mods that change data files inside update.rpf are the usual cause, since the update may have changed the same file.
